Well. This was… something. I remember that I wouldn’t see it because it was CGI, and the few trailors and pieces of content I saw were disturbing. I was not wrong. Admittedly it was cutting edge for 2007. But as you can hear, it wasn’t really my thing, especially because no one would put clothes on Hrothgar at the beginning. I also hadn’t read the story in years, and while I remembered the gist of it, I forgot all the fun details like how Hrothgar was Grendel’s dad, for instance. Or what a colossal dick Unferth is.
Also gotta love that they used the “hide his penis with random things that just happen to be lying around” bit from Austin Powers when Beowulf fights Grendel naked.
This came out in 2007 from Paramount Pictures and was directed by Robert Zemeckis. The screenplay was written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary and is based on the Old English epic poem that was probably written somewhere between 975 and 1025. It stars Ray Winstone as Beowulf, Robin Wright as Wealthow, Anthony Hopkins as Hrothgar, John Malkovich as Unferth, Angelina Jolie as Grendel’s mother, and Crispin Glover as Grendel.
